Compartment Description

Compartment 23 includes a 3km section of floodbank protecting Short Dam Level marshes along the River Waveney, between Seven Mile Carr and Burgh St Peter. There are a few sites of historical interest ranging from post medieval remains and sites of former wind pumps and a possible drainage mill site, to archaeological findings of medieval Saxon Age remains.

In 2006 flood alleviation improvement works took place and were successfully completed in autumn 2007. Most of the works involved floodbank strengthening as well as short stretches of floodbank rollback.

There are no public footpaths within the compartment and as a result the river bank cannot be accessed for bankside fishing. However, the Shrublands Angling Club leases a section of piled riverbank downstream from the boat dyke which can be accessed from a track near Dicks Mount.
Important mooring areas include the private moorings alongside the Boat House, the informal moorings alongside Castle Mill and the commercial moorings at the Waveney River Centre.
