Compartment Description

Compartment 6A covers an area of 2130 hectares and comprises approximately 26500m of floodbank along the bank of the River Thurne. There are 2 designated Sites of Special Scientific Interest in this large compartment, Priory Meadows, Hickling and Upper Thurne Broads and Marshes which are also designated as Special Protection Areas (SPA), Special Areas of Conservation (cSAC) and a Ramsar sites under European and International legislation. A significant proportion is managed as Tier 1 (permanent grassland), 2 (extensive grassland), 4A (Arable grassland margins) and fen under ESA (Environmentally Sensitive Area) agreement. Hickling Wall stretches along the north-eastern section of the compartment and Waxham New cut runs from north to south. The village of Horsey is located within the compartment boundaries and there are a number of public and permissive footpaths.
