Compartment Information

Name: Compartment 5, How Hill - Ludham
Location: Rivers Thurne, Ant and Bure - St Benet's Level and Ludham Marshes

Compartment Description

Compartment 5 comprises a 10967m stretch of floodbank from How Hill on the River Ant, along the River Bure past St Benets Abbey and up the River Thurne to Womack Water. The floodbank protects an area of 584 hectares which includes Ludham Marshes and St Benets Level. Within this compartment there are numerous historical sites such as the remains of medieval Grade I listed St Benets Abbey, post-medieval Toad Hole Cottage, Turf Fen Mill and St Benets Level Mill (all Grade II listed). Also included is the site of post-medieval Coldharbour Windpump, Skeleton Mill, Bridge Mill, and Womack Water. Recorded archaeological findings include post-medieval lime and brick kiln, a copper harness-pendant, Roman coins and a Bronze Age flint dagger.

Flood alleviation improvement works along the floodbank began in 2004 and were completed in 2006. The works included long lengths of setback especially on the River Ant. Piling removal along the Rivers Ant and Bure was undertaken in winter 2008-2009. The Broads Authority will be using setback areas for disposal of dredgings.

Public access for walking within the compartment is good with a number of public footpaths and a permissive path that connects with local roads to provide a network of shorter and longer circular walks. Important mooring sites are at How Hill and Ludham Staithe, both of which were re-piled as part of the improvement works. The compartment contains some of the most notable stretches for river fishing in the Broads at Coldharbour Farm (River Thurne) and St. Benets (River Bure).
