Compartment Description

Compartment 35 covers an area of 900 hectares and extends along the right hand bank of the River Yare between the confluence of the Rivers Yare and Waveney and Reedham and section along the River Waveney and Haddiscoe Cut. The marshes themselves are all subject to Environmentally Sensitive Area (ESA) payments and typically fit in with the Tier 2 (extensive grassland) requirements. There are five habitable properties within this compartment and two main drainage pumps; Askews Pump and Pettingills Pump. A public right of way runs along the crest of the floodbank around the entire perimeter of the island.

The scale of the compartment has meant the defence works have been divided into three phases.

Summary of works
Flood defence works along Haddiscoe Cut are now nearing completion. Remedial works will shortly start to repair areas of soft erosion protection on the Island side and to complete the filling of gabion baskets on the railway side. The Broads Authority will be dredging the Cut from May 2006.
