Compartment Information

Name: Chedgrave and Hardley, Compartment 21
Location: Chedgrave Common and Hardley Marshes, River Chet

Compartment Description

Compartment 21 includes a 4958m stretch of floodbank along the River Chet, River Yare and Hardley Dyke protecting Chedgrave Common and Hardley Marshes. Within this compartment there are also a few sites of historical interest such as a listed late 16th century house (Norwich Road), medieval commemorative Hardley Cross and the site of post-medieval Adams Mill wind pump (though no above ground remains exist). Recorded archaeological findings include Roman coins, medieval pottery and a late Saxon spearhead with silver inlay from the Viking period.

Flood alleviation improvement works began in 2005 and were completed in 2007. The works involved nearly 3000m of floodbank strengthening as well as approximately 1840m of setback floodbank mostly along the River Chet.

There are opportunities for walking within the compartment as the Wherrymans Way long distance footpath runs along the entire length of the floodbank as well as a few footpaths cutting through the grazing marshes. The Wherrymans Way footpath also allows access for bird watching along Hardley Flood as well as fishing from the riverbank. Hardley Dyke is also a well known angling site as well as the land leased from owners at Chedgrave Common along the River Chet and along Hardley Flood SSSI. Important mooring sites include Hardley Dyke, the Broads Authority 24-hour moorings at Chedgrave Common as well as the piled sections of river edge close to Hardley Cross.
