Compartment Description

Compartment 14 includes a 3570m stretch of floodbank protecting Cantley Marshes on the River Yare, between Fleet Dyke and The Red House public house. Within this compartment there are a few historical and archaeological sites such as the nearby medieval St Marys Church (listed) in Hassingham, former Cantley Parish Staithe and a post medieval wind pump. Archaeological findings included a Neolithic flint axe-head, medieval peat cuttings and crop marks.

Flood alleviation improvement works began in April 2007 and were completed in 2008. Most of the works involved floodbank strengthening as well as a stretch of setback, between the sewage works and The Red House pub, towards the downstream end of the compartment.

There are many public access routes providing good walking opportunities throughout the compartment. A public footpath runs along the entire length of the floodbank and continues downstream where it joins the Wherrymans Way at Reedham Ferry. Also, a number of footpaths run through the grazing marshes and link with the footpath along the floodbank providing a series of circular walks.
The Broads Authority 24-hour moorings and piling alongside the Reedcutter public house provide easy access for bank fishing.
